Lei Cheng joined the Foreign Service in 1992 in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. His first overseas post was in Washington, D.C. (2001-2005) where he was in charge of bilateral political relations. Prior to the current post, he was the Political Counsellor at the Chinese Embassy in New Zealand (2010-2013), the Counsellor (2007-2009) at the Department of North American & Oceanian Affairs, the Director of Canadian & Pacific Island countries affairs (2006-2007), and the Director of the American affairs (2005-2006). Lei Cheng holds a BA from Guangdong University of Foreign Studies in China and a Master Degree of International Public Policy from the Johns Hopkins University.
